Exam Room - Your Pets Health

All our patients receive a thorough exam, which includes a complete examination of the ears, nose, and throat, gums and teeth for dental disease, palpation of the internal organs, and heart check. A large portion of the doctor's time is spent with you and your pet in consultation, answering questions and concerns. If lab work is required, Cedar Grove Animal Hospital is affiliated with a certified laboratory that can provide results usually within 24 hours.

To help owners recognize the special health needs of mature animals we're celebrating Seniors in February here at Cedar Grove Animal Hospital. Since Dental health is one of the most critical factors of a healthy animal, we're also celebrating Dental month in February.

Yes, animals do get dental disease just like people. In fact animals often suffer from very severe dental problems. Since dogs and cats age much faster than people, imagine yourself not ever having any dental checkups or dental work done at the age of 35 or older. It doesn't happen. Then why should our animal companions not have the same care. Sore gums and diseased teeth cause great pain to our pets, affects their chewing capabilities and their digestions. One of the most dangerous affects of dental disease is the damage that can be done to the heart, liver and kidneys by the bacteria from the mouth that starts circulating in the blood stream. A regular dental examination will forewarn you if a dental problem is starting to develop. Preventative dental care can save the pet a lot of agony, and save you money. It is far more economical for pet owners to have their pet's teeth checked and cleaned on a regular basis than it is to wait for the problem to show itself.

During Pet Dental Month Cedar Grove Animal Hospital is offering 20 % off on dental services and products.

As part of our Celebration of Seniors when you have a Geriatric Blood Panel done on your pet you will receive a free 4 or 2 kg bag of Medi-Cal food for your dog or cat.

Nutrition plays an important role in your pets health at any life stage and Senior pets have special nutritional needs. A geriatric blood panel is the best way to detect hidden or smoldering diseases often found in older animals including hypothyroidism in dogs, hyperthyroidism in cats, kidney or liver disease. The earlier these diseases are recognized the more effectively these silent killers can be treated or managed.

 November/December

Fall and winter is the time when dogs and cats get hit by cars, dogs ingest antifreeze, cats swallow tinsel from your Christmas tree, and so forth. We as animal companions need to be diligent in looking after our pets at this time. Because it gets dark so soon during the winter, our pets running around outside often are not seen by the cars whizzing by and tragedy happens. Make sure your pets are inside the house or a fenced yard, especially after dark. If the unthinkable happens, call Cedar Grove Animal Hospital immediately and Dr. Rebele will meet you at the hospital in short order.

Car drivers are also flushing out their radiators at this time, and in preparation for winter adding antifreeze to the water. Thus antifreeze can very often be seen lying in puddles both in your yard or on the street. When walking dogs they often want to drink from the puddles in the street after a rain. This can be very dangerous as there is a good likelihood of it containing antifreeze. Please be careful to clean up any spillage immediately as the ingestion of antifreeze can be fatal if not treated within 4-6 hours. Antifreeze causes crystals to form in the kidneys and eventually the kidneys shut down. Except for the initial staggering and drunk-appearing gait, the resulting outward symptoms are not evident for 1-4 weeks, and by then the damage is done and irreversible. So please do not wait for the symptoms to appear; if you even suspect antifreeze ingestion contact the Veterinarian immediately for available emergency treatment.

You also know by this time that cats just love shiny Christmas tree tinsel. Please don't use it if you have a cat. Invariably, they will play with it, swallow it, and then we've got a problem. The tinsel could tie a knot around the cat's bowels and obstruct function (also true for dental floss). This puts the life of your beloved cat in grave danger, and could require emergency surgery.
